As Craig Keener pointed out, Jesus’ heart for the woman and the people of Sychar (pronounced soo-khar) was greater than the customs, traditions, and cultural boundaries of men. Jesus wants all men and woman everywhere to be saved!

This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:3-4 NIV).

Jesus needed to go through Samaria. Why? Because He had a “divine appointment” to be at that well in Samaria with that woman. Jesus had many such divine appointments while He walked the earth. A divine appointment is a circumstance or event that takes place in our lives that was set up by God to bring about His plan and desire in a certain situation. Another way to say it is:

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven (Matthew 6:10).

And we should pray this Scripture every day to see an increase of divine appointments in our own lives.

Jesus knew that there was a divine appointment awaiting Him in the city. And if your heart is open to them, divine appointments will come your way for the rest of your life.

As I am writing this book, just in the last week I have had multiple divine appointments. From ministering to a 16-year-old runaway, to a man blaring wild music next to me in his SUV (I simply rolled down my window, got his attention, and said that Jesus loved him and has a plan for his life among other things and his heart was visibly touched), to a salesman coming to my door, to praying for a woman who needed a healing in a grocery store—just in the last week. And believe me, if I can do it, anyone can.

I think that we make these divine appointments harder than we realize. We have to learn to discern these God appointments by remaining open to the leading of the Spirit wherever we go throughout the day. Sometimes it’s a subtle “nudge” from the Holy Spirit to speak life to someone. Sometimes, you have a word of knowledge for another. At other times, a great compassion and love wells up in your heart and you just have to do or say something. Sometimes a divine appointment is very obvious. Like the woman I saw the other day in the grocery store walking around in such pain with a knee brace. I felt that nudge from the Holy Spirit to pray for her. Why? She was hurting. She needed hope and healing and Jesus is the Healer and the Hope Giver. She was visibly touched when I prayed for her. Was she completely healed at that moment? Maybe. I told her to believe that she was healed from that moment on. You see, it’s my job to pray and God’s job to heal. I did my part by yielding to the divine appointment and I know God will do His part.

Don’t make it so hard when it’s so obvious.
